Menu Alterations, Level Select, and Bonuses Other than the menu backgrounds; the basic menu layout has been left unaltered, except for the way the NEW GAME is handled. When you choose new game from the menu, you will be presented with the option of choosing either the Max Payne Game, or the Katana Levels. Under each menu is the difficulty select which will start the selected game from level 1 at the chosen difficulty, and a “Jump to chapter” option, which for all intents and purposes, is a simple level select. Note on Tutorial Level Other than the standard Max Payne tutorial level; there are no special tutorial levels for Katana – sorry it would just take too long to program. However, there are some brief tutorial tips that flash up on the screen during the first few rooms of level 1. To turn these on or off, either check or uncheck the Gameplay Tips box, under the OptionsGame menu. Note on Bonus Levels Katana has a small number of bonus levels that were made quickly or alongside the development of Katana. They are by no means to the same standard of the main levels (some of them aren’t even properly finished); nor do their implications hold any relevance to the main story. But feel free to try them out if you want. Bonus Features Lock If you’re interested, a file has been created by TheHunted, that will change the windows registry entry made by the Max Payne game, concerning which difficulty modes have been unlocked. This is merely to allow you to disable the bonus katana levels (which are unlocked along with the max payne ones), and enable you to unlock them “properly” by completing Katana. Again, this is purely to for your convenience, and is not necessary to play Katana or Max Payne. By opening the file, you will see that the only changes it makes to your windows registry is to lock the timedmode difficulty (Dead on arrival) in Max Payne. To lock the bonus features, simply double click on registry file: “mp1_lock_timedmode.reg” and choose yes. To unlock the bonus features, simply double click on registry file: “mp1_unlock_timedmode.reg” and choose yes. The files were tested to work on Windows XP, although you agree to run them entirely at your own risk.
