These are the most advanced environmental goals in the Western world. But the UK construction industry also needs to address other sustainability issues, particularly the negative impact of waste. Currently, the UK construction industry produces 100m tonnes of construction waste a year, including 13m tonnes of unused materials, of which only 20 per cent can be recycled (Alwan et al., 2017). Most of this waste ends up in landfills, further polluting the biosphere. Dadhich et al. (2015) found that the UK Green Building Council identified buildings as one of the most emission-intensive industries, accounting for about 50 per cent of the UK's greenhouse gas production. The gypsum board supply chain is one of the leading suppliers and contractors of building materials in Europe and is the most commonly used product in the UK construction industry. Different interventions in the supply chain can reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
