1. IntroductionAt John F. Kennedy International Airport, the Port Authority of New York andNew Jersey has undertaken a $1.9 billion project to implement an 8.1 mile elevatedguideway, fully automated driverless light rail system. This system will providetransportation for airline passengers and airport employees between airlineterminals, rental car locations and parking lots on-airport, and most importantlyprovide access to New York City Transit subways at Howard Beach and the LongIsland Rail Road (LIRR), subways and buses at Jamaica, Queens. The system isscheduled to completely open in the first quarter of 2003 and will provide fullaccess to Manhattan via the subway and LIRR commuter rail connections.
