Richard Gard has lived in Illinois for his whole life. He is well-known in his community andaround the world for his incredible craftsmanship of making music boxes. Gard is 50 years old. Hehas been making music boxes for 12 years. Creating music boxes is something he does for love, not only for profit. “Music boxes make people feel good. That’s why I enjoy creating them somuch,” Gard said. “There is something special about the way music boxes take you to differentplaces.”Gard uses a variety of wood to make his music boxes. But he prefers oak because it isbeautiful and strong. He is careful when he chooses the music to put in his boxes. Two of hisfavorite choices are “Memories” from the musical “Cats” and “Canon in D.”When Gard creates a music box, he puts his soul into it. He has an emotional attachment toeach piece he creates. He says it is difficult to say goodbye to a music box after he finishes makingit. But he hopes the music box will go to a good home. “I want my music boxes to bring happinessto people. I don’t want them to sit on a shelf. I hope people will use them and enjoy having them. Iam giving away a part of myself when I create a music box,” Gard said.Gard is often praised for his talents. But he is careful not to become too proud. “As long asyou feel humble about what you do and have a desire to improve, you will keep getting better. Assoon as you think that you are the best, you will accomplish nothing,” said Gard
