Arnold endured the frustration of testing poorly built engines and planes; testified before Congress in front of many who had no comprehension of air- power, yet would make funding decisions precluding any serious advances in the field; and lost close friends to accidents, all while carrying on a longdistance romance with Bee. It is little wonder that he wanted to marry and bail out of Washington, a place he often sarcastically referred to as a “sleepy town” or “that quiet little burg.”
