Diastasis Recti AbdominisAs outlined in chapter 3, this condition is usually painless and causes no harm to the fetus, but it may increase back pain as a result of a decrease in abdominal support of the lumbar spine. Pregnant women should be instructed on how to check the width of their diastasis recti and be advised on ways to decrease the pressure they exert on their abdominal wall during daily activities. Instruct women to first roll over onto their side and then push up with their arms when rising up from a supine position to avoid putting stress on the abdominal wall. Pregnant women also should be advised not to hold their breath and bear down (Valsalva maneuver) during any exercise or activity.
