Abstract: Garlic planting requires to take single seed and plant with scaly bud upward and vertical. An automatic garlic seed directing device was designed for auxiliary garlic seeding by a seed placed funnel, the correcting mechanism, and automatic control system. Three factors produce influences on the device performance, and they are characteristics of garlic seed, limited notch diameter of seed placed funnel, and funnel taper of seed placed funnel. The most optimal structural parameters of seed placed funnel were determined by theoretical analysis. As Lanling garlic and Jinxiang garlic were research object, which were Divided into three groups according to size. The 3D design software (Solidworks) was used to simulate above three factors and to analyze their rules of action. Simulation results showed that suitable range of funnel taper and limited notch diameter of seed placed funnel for three groups seed were from 40° to 60° and 6 - 8 mm, respectively. The bench test showed that when funnel taper was 60° and limited notch diameter was 10 mm, the success rate of three groups seeds scaly bud directing were 89.8%, 91.6% and 96.6% respectively, which could meet the agricultural requirement of garlic planting.
