The research on excitation control of large synchronous generator has been a very active field for a long time, and has become the "touchstone" of various control theories and methods. After years of exploration, abundant achievements have been made in theory and practice. However, at present and in the future, With the continuous expansion of the power grid scale and the improvement of the requirements for the safety and stability level, as well as the innovation of the control theory, the research in this field will continue to develop in depth. The author thinks that, at present, we should make some analysis and summary of seeking truth from facts and "connecting the preceding and the following" in order to make it clear: which problems have been satisfactorily solved, which key problems need not to be studied and which have not been satisfactorily solved, are the focus of future research; which problems are still unclear and need to be clarified; It will be of great benefit to know which problems are trivial and need not be indulged in. It is true that one or two research groups are not competent to publish one or two articles in order to accomplish this beneficial task. We need colleagues from different schools to express their own opinions and gather their own ideas. This paper attempts to make a brief summary of the history and current situation of the development of excitation control of large-scale generating units, and from the engineering point of view, the problems that have been solved well, the problems that still exist and the general trend in the future.<br>
