Of the research connecting similarity and
interpersonal relationships, two main types of
studies proliferate: those that have fabricated

manipulations and those that have investigated
actual similarities. Both types of studies have
enhanced scientific understanding of the
importance and potency of similarity in
relationships. Across both the experimental and
correlational approaches, two notable themes
emerge.
