Orville was about to provide Arnold an ill-fated approximation of what he wanted: the Wright Model C, a six-cylinder, 55-horsepower, improved version of the Model B.51 Dated one day before Arnold’s request for bigger engines (mail return took about one week), Orville promised “one and possibly two new motors for next season, of six or eight cylinders. ” Orville anticipated an enormous surplus of power adequate to quickly lift heavy loads. Perceptively, Orville also pointed out that increased power meant better control in gusty wind conditions, still one of the greatest dangers to fliers.52 Arnold and Wright were in sync.
