In rebutting the charge of injustice in such cases the proponents of the RCT argue that so long as the participants in the RCT have not been chosen arbitrarily—that is, because of some economic or social disadvantage—then it might be said that they have been chosen to participate in the sacrifice not unfairly but at random, as the result partly of a natural lottery which made them apt subjects for study (i.e., sufferers of the particular disease) and in part as a result of a true lottery.
