This portion of the program is the beginning of meaning making. It is one accomplishment for patients to identify the meaning they assigned through their current narrative, but it is another essential part to revise the familiar story so that it fits withhow patients would like to function in the new experience (Parry& Doan, 1994). Working with the patient on meaningful newinterpretations regarding cancer will help alleviate the symptoms and possibly prevent illness-related stress disorder in theaftermath of the illness. During this third session, the groupassists the person by noticing possible meanings, particularlyfocusing on how the new portrayals and symbols differed fromthe old ones.
