Figures 6-1c and 6-1d show that as you increase the magnitude of yourapplied force, the magnitude of the static frictional force also increases andthe block remains at rest. When the applied force reaches a certain magnitude,however, the block “breaks away” from its intimate contact with the tabletop andaccelerates leftward (Fig. 6-1e). The frictional force that then opposes the motionis called the kinetic frictional force .
