Theory behind this result is that plastic deformation occurs in the plane of the copper atoms. Accordingly, dislocations plane copper atoms increases, and with increasing amounts of cold work, the dislocation density increases. Eventually, the accumulation of dislocations at the grain boundaries, and limit any further position on the wrong atomic plane. It increases the yield strength of copper, tensile strength and hardness, but reduces the ductility.
