Although his North Island performance report was terrible, his new commander in Panama, Maj. Gen. Clarence Edwards, did not appear to hold it against Arnold. He lived in the general’s house and had free use of his car during the first month of his tour of duty. It may have been the general’s tolerance that prompted Arnold to write, “He is a real man, the first real General I have ever met.”22
