A more important reason for narratology’s focus on the rhetorical manipulation of aspects rather than on story elements is that how one is to study such elements is by no means clear. While students at the undergraduate level can usually graspwith relatively little difficulty the idea that a narrative is a series of choices made by an author to achieve a certain effect and meaning, we have considerably more difficulty in explaining what an inquiry into the construction of “event” or “action” entails.
